The Ried

The many faces of nature. The word Ried comes from the German word “Rieth” which means rush or reed, and by extension flood plain. The Grand Ried of the river Ill, between Sélestat and the Rhine, is the most extensive in Alsace. Its dense network of ground-water rivers flow through a changing landscape of hay meadows, reed marshes and woods where attentive visitors can spot protected animal and plant species.
